about
Recorded live in rehearsal on 15th March 2022 by Luke Smith and featuring: Tim Orchard guitar/Bruno Bomp Wilkinson vocals / Duncan Russell guitar / Andy Bull drums / Tim Brooke bass – song written by Tim Orchard.
Mess In A Dress was written in 1978 and is about individualism through self-expression - it’s not what you wear, it’s who you are that counts. It’s loosely based on a girl that my friends and I used to see at punk gigs in Bath in 1977. Her dress sense was very individual. Her inspiration was Poly Styrene. She moved to London in early-1978 to be closer to the punk scene and to become a part of it. We subsequently learned that the move was ill-fated as she became embroiled in the seedier elements of Soho life in order to survive financially.
Aw, mess in a dress, you couldn’t care less, you hate them at best
Aw, mess in a dress, your zest to impress is work-in-progress
And they attack you for the clothes you wear
They attack you for the colour of your hair
They’re putting you under review
They point at you and say, “you-live in-a zoo”
Aw, mess in a dress, you couldn’t care less, it’s the world you detest
Aw, mess in a dress, live life to excess and screw all the rest
And they attack you for the clothes you wear
They attack you for the colour of your hair
Their Waterloo, they met it with you
They point at you and say, “you-live in-a zoo”
Mess in a dress. Mess in a dress. Mess in a dress.
Mess in a dress. Mess in a dress. Mess in a dress.
Aw, mess in a dress, their rules you protest, their patience you test
Aw, mess in a dress, you’ve made a success not following the rest
And they attack you for the clothes you wear
They attack you for the colour of your hair
They’re putting you under review
They point at you and say, “you-live in-a zoo”
You dress in clothes your mother chose
You sit and paint your face
You don’t care about your hair
You leave it out of place
You walk the streets telling people you meet
You’re a foreign empress
But you can’t disguise that behind your conceit
You’re only a mess in a dress
With no need to impress. In fact, you couldn’t care less…
Coz you’re a mess, a mess in a dress, with no need to impress. In fact, you couldn’t care less…
Bath/Bristol-based band formed in 2019 but rooted in 1977 when guitarists Tim Orchard and Duncan Russell, bassist Tim Brooke
and drummer Andy Bull originally met donned leather jackets & discovered punk. A name taken from a fictitious bovver rock group in a glam rock film screenplay. Latest recruit is 16 year old Bruno of BOMP who will be taking over on lead vocals until we can't take it any more...more
